Process Safety

We facilitate structured HAZOP studies to systematically identify process deviations and evaluate potential hazards in design and operation. Our approach aligns with IEC 61882 and helps reduce risk through early stage identification and mitigation of operability issues.

A high level, early phase assessment focused on identifying potential hazards related to plant layout, process design, equipment placement, and external interfaces. HAZID studies are ideal during concept design and FEED stages to inform safety by design decisions.

We conduct Quantitative Risk Assessments to calculate the likelihood and potential consequences of hazardous events using failure rate data, consequence modelling and risk criteria. QRA supports land use planning, regulatory justification and safety case development.

Our LOPA assessments evaluate whether the safeguards in place are sufficient to mitigate process risks to tolerable levels. This semi-quantitative method helps bridge the gap between HAZOP and QRA and informs SIL (Safety Integrity Level) selection.

Using industry standard tools (e.g. Phast, EFFECTS), we simulate the impact of hazardous events including toxic gas dispersion, thermal radiation, flash fires, and explosion overpressure to support zoning, risk assessment, and emergency response planning.

We develop clear, visual Bowtie Diagrams that map out threat pathways from causes to consequences, highlighting the preventive and mitigative barriers in place. Bowtie Analysis is a powerful tool for communicating risk ownership and control strategy effectiveness.

We assess the required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) for Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) based on LOPA outputs and verify that the chosen design meets performance requirements. This ensures compliance with IEC 61508 / 61511 and provides assurance of functional safety.

We conduct PHAs using various methodologies (HAZID, What-If, FMEA, etc.) tailored to the lifecycle stage, providing early stage hazard identification or supplementing formal reviews during detailed design and operation.

We help clients plan for credible major incident scenarios by modelling event outcomes (e.g. fire, explosion, toxic release), assessing detection and mitigation systems and reviewing emergency response effectiveness.
